“REPOSSESS” – SAY WHAT??

Now, I know what you’re thinking –– isn’t that what they do to people when they’re behind on their car payments? Well, there are other definitions of “repossess” that I would like you to consider. Webster’s Dictionary lists: recapture, reclaim, recover, retake and retrieve.

And, I feel these terms best describe how caregivers must learn to take a proactive approach to recapture, reclaim, recover, retake retrieve their own health and wellness to make their journey a little easier.

So, what does stress have to do with caregiver wellness?

Well, I’m so glad you asked, because in my opinion – it has everything to do with being a caregiver. And yes, you do need to start repossessing your stress today, because research has shown, that stress can affect your health in a variety of ways. And as caregivers we are particularly at risk to many stressful situations daily.

When many people take on the caregiving role, they become so immersed in caring for their loved one, they tend to lose their sense of self, and that can lead to a decline in their own health and wellness.

Now generally speaking, most caregivers are in good health, but, it is not uncommon to find those who are providing care with serious health problems of their own. Many research studies have shown that symptoms of depression or anxiety, as well as higher levels of obesity are often common place.

Caregivers also may be at higher risk for brain fog and mental decline, and often experience long-term medical issues , such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes and heart disease just to name a few.

Women caregivers, in particular, (and I can personally attest to this), are less likely to get the required health checkups necessary on a regular basis. Also, problems with not getting enough sleep, rest and relaxation, (“me time”), not eating right and getting enough physical activity, can lead serious health problems in the long term.

So what’s a body to do? Do a quick self checkup. Are you trying to play wonder woman or supergirl? Or are you a helicopter caregiver, who feels the only way things will get done right is if you do it, or even worse, if have a helper, paid or volunteer, instead of spending time relaxing, you’re watching to make sure everything is “done just right” which can lead to many stressful days. Again, I confess - I've been guilty! So, from personal experience, trust me it’s an easy trap to fall into.

And, put yourself in the shoes of the one you’re caring for, although they may have a terminal illness or disease, if you are stressed, your loved one may be able to sense your emotions, which can be upsetting for them as well, and now you may have another problem to resolve.

Also, when you’re stretched too thin, you may start having feelings of resentment because you may feel overworked and overwhelmed, which can lead to depression. And, although your loved one may be ill, once again, they still may be able to pick up on your negative emotions and it may be upsetting to them.

Repossess your life from stress

The term "Repossess" means to take action, to recapture, reclaim, regain, recover, retake, and retrieve. Try retrieving some time for yourself during your daily routine to relax, and unwind. In other words as caregivers, we sometimes become so involved in our care responsibilities that we lose ourselves in the process.

Well, I hope you’ll make a pledge to yourself today, to: repossess, reclaim, retake and retrieve your life back by caring for your own health and wellness. You are the first line of defense for your loved one, and research has shown that many caregivers die BEFORE the person they are caring for, due to stress related illnesses – it’s a somber thought – but nevertheless true.

So, why not become a “Repo Caregiver” and repossess your stress today! Take a moment to relax and smell the roses, and remember - your loved one is depending on you!

Be Well - Stay Well -Because Caregivers Need Care Too!!
