TRAVELING DOWN MEMORY LANE
Do you remember when family and friends would be dancing the night away doing the “Harlem Shuffle”, or the sliding across the floor doing the “Boogaloo” with James Brown on Soul Train.
Those were the good old days right? Everyone seemed to glide across the dance floor as light as a feather twirling and sliding and getting their groove on doing the latest dance craze. The moves were so smooth it was like we were skating on ice.
FATHER TIME
And now as years have passed, many seniors are still sliding and shuffling their feet, but it has nothing to do with dancing the night away. According to research many seniors shuffle as they walk because of lack of mobility and the fear of falling.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Now a days it’s not uncommon to see seniors as they are going about their business, shuffling and sliding of feet as they walk, but it has nothing to with dancing, but rather health related problems such as joint pain, poor vision, medication side effects, weak leg and hip muscles, which for many results in a fear of falling.
CHECK WITH YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL
But all is not lost, while you or your loved one may not be able the slide and glide across the dance floor any more, they don’t have to shuffle along for fear of falling either. Research studies have found, there are some simple exercises that can help with regaining balance, strengthening muscles and gaining flexibility in joints.
Of course you would want to check with your health professional to make sure it is safe and in line with any health conditions you may have before you start any exercise. But as a caregiver, it is important to have signs of shuffling checked out because shuffling can also be a sign of dementia.
In part 2 of my next blog, I’m going to share the 10 most common causes of fall risks
